Battery recycling plantclosure a blow to Wellington region

Theclosure of the Exide Technologies in Petone with the loss of40 jobs is a blow for the region, says the EPMU, the unionrepresenting workers at the company.

Exide announced thisafternoon that it would close its battery recycling plant atthe end of March. the company cited a recent Court of Appealdecision to allow the continued unlimited export of usedlead-acid batteries, and the impact on raw product availablefor processing, as the reason for the closure.

“It’s asad day for our members who now face a very uncertain futuretrying to get new jobs in the region,” says EPMU organiserKim Ellis. “There are a lot of families who’ll befinding it tough tonight.”

The EPMU has nearly 30members at the Petone company. the workers are entitled toredundancy pay as part of their collective employmentagreement.

Ms Ellis says the EPMU has organised forrepresentatives from Work and Income and Inland Revenue tobe on site next week to help Exide staff with theirentitlements.
