Police to crack down on red light runners » Local News » The Edmond Sun

EDMOND — too many motorists are running red lights in Edmond, and city officers will be cracking down on offenders beginning this week. Glynda Chu, spokeswoman for the Edmond Police Department, said the crackdown is an effort to cut down on the number of drivers running red lights and creating potentially dangerous, if not deadly situations. “It’s obviously a problem,” Chu said. Oftentimes, drivers are distracted or in a hurry, trying to beat a red light, Chu said. Police want local motorists to know that in Edmond if you run a red light chances are you are going to get a ticket, which costs $119. If you cause a collision, the cost could be much higher; your life or the life of someone else, Chu said. “If the light is red stop. If the light is yellow it is best to stop because it could turn red while you are in the intersection and you could get a ticket,” she said. Beginning this week, and for the next several weeks, Edmond officers will begin this enforcement first by working the top 10 intersections that have the most collisions, Chu said. Officers will be working these areas two times a day. In 2010, the top 10 collision locations, where enforcement will begin, were and are: 1. East second Street and South Bryant Avenue; 2. East 33rd Street and South Broadway; 3. West Danforth Road and North Kelly Avenue; 4. West Danforth Road and North Santa Fe Avenue; 5. East 15th Street and South Bryant Avenue; 6. West Edmond Road and South Santa Fe Avenue; 7. West 15th Street and South Santa Fe Avenue; 8. East 33rd Street and South Boulevard; 9. East 15th Street and South Broadway; and 10. East second Street and South Broadway. once these intersections have been worked, officers will move to other parts of the city working each location twice daily, Chu said. marks@edmondsun.com | 341-2121, ext. 108
