Live Oak — Recycling in Suwannee County has been in the hot-seat recently. In may 2010, the Suwannee High School Environmental Club approached Suwannee County commissioners to get a county-wide recycling program started. at the time, the board agreed to implement a one year trial on a recycling program and revisit it after a year. it has been more than a year and the issue was brought forward at a commission meeting in early January by a concerned citizen. according to SHS Environmental Club advisor Amy Hendry, they have recently partnered with local action group Suwannee Progress to develop a youth-based recycling program throughout Suwannee County.   “the kids are currently working events at the Spirit of the Suwannee to further the Spirit's corporate recycling efforts and to learn how companies can better become corporate citizens,” Henry said. she said that the students are visiting recycling programs in neighboring counties to learn more about the different recycling options as well. “we will soon be working with a group of students from FAMU who are evaluating the city of Tallahassee's recycling program and developing recommendations for Suwannee County,” Hendry said. the club is also in charge of recycling paper at SHS. “we work to promote environmental awareness among our fellow students,” said Hendry. Currently the county recycles scrap metals and white goods, or household appliances such as washers, dryers and refrigerators. a private company picks up newspapers and cardboard. Suwannee County Public Works Director Randy Harris confirmed that the items being placed into the igloos at collection sites are being recycled, but said that county has a very limited recycling program because there is not enough volume to attract companies into the area to pick up the material. he also said that the county has been mandated to increase its recycling amount.
